High-Contrast Black & White Mobile (for Bubbalu)

You've probably read about the benefits of having high-contrast decor for your newborn, but might have been put off by the purchase price of some commercial products... or maybe you just felt like making your own!

You can make a mobile with these shapes, or just cut them out and tack them to the wall or ceiling, or use them to make a collage for your baby to look at in the car (glue shapes to cardboard or fabric, pin to seat in front of baby).

Materials:

  • Two copies each of desired shapes
  • Cardboard to print the shapes onto so that its more rigid (although I just used normal paper and it still worked fine)
  • Glue stick or double-sided tape
  • Scissors or craft knife (the circular shapes are a little easier to cut with scissors)
  • Needle
  • Thread or string (to use to hang the shapes)
  • Something to hang everything from (I bought a pre-made 45cm wire ring from Spotlight for $1.50 which works a treat)

Time:
30min to an hour

Instructions:

1. Print out the shapes, two copies of each sheet.

2. Cut almost all the way around one shape set, but leave the section where the shapes almost touch uncut:

3. Then fold the shapes in half matching up as much as possible ' apply some glue to the non-printed sides of the shapes ' then trim any "wonky" bits.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all of the shapes you wish to use for your mobile.

4. Once you have all your shapes prepared the next step is to "string" them together, the trick here is to get a combination of "side" and "bottom" views that will be interesting for your baby.

It is easier to "string" the shapes together in sections and to leave stringing them to the top wire frame to the very last so that you can play around with the balance and lengths. Thread through middle of "bottom" view shape (A) up to the bottom middle of "side" view shape (B). Then using a different piece of thread, thread through the top middle of "side" view shape (C) up to the wire frame that hangs everything (D) BUT don't secure it to the wire frame yet, leave this step to last so that you can play around with the balance and lengths.

Repeat this step for all of the shapes you wish to use for your mobile.

5. Once you have completed threading all of the stands of shapes you wish to use for your mobile, you need to then secure them to the top wire frame. This may take a little trial-an-error to get the balance right.

6. Hang and enjoy!
